What is the mystery behind climbing chalk?
A frequent conversation topic among climbers is the science behind climbing chalk and why it is used as a climbing commodity. Chalk is the colloquial term for the mixture of Magnesium Carbonate and Calcium Carbonate, a material used in a wide range of everyday life situations (e.g. in agriculture, in the classroom and as an agent to increase the friction of the hands in sports such as climbing). Specially for climbing, it is imperative that the chalk used is as pure as possible. Both Magnesium Carbonate and Calcium Carbonate absorb water, but the difference between the two is that Magnesium Carbonate is not soluble in water. This means that MgCO3 traps the water molecules in its structure providing a better grip; because sweat can not solve magnesium carbonate, it is the perfect material to keep your hands dry under pressure. Many chalk companies do not use pure Magnesium Carbonate and “spike” their products with other compounds that could hurt your skin and affect your overall climbing performance negatively.
